Michael’s Story: Lessons Learned from an entirely preventable death

Date: Tuesday 28th March
Time: 8.30-10.00am
Venue: Stockport Business & Innovation Centre, Broadstone Mill, Stockport SK5 7DL
Speakers: Louise Taggart & Kate Hargan

This event is free for our clients and their guests. A light breakfast will be provided.

Michael was an experienced electrician and engaged to be married. He died, aged 26 in an electrical incident at work, which could and should have been prevented. Michael’s story is told by his sister Louise. Louise’s aim is heartfelt and simple: to stop others losing their lives or their loved ones in preventable incidents.

Safety Smart would like to invite you and your guest to come to the first in our 2017 series of seminars and hear this frank, open and honest account of the events leading up to Michael’s death, the prosecution and the terrible impact of the incident. She will look at what went wrong – in this case a catalogue of errors in Health and Safety management, any one of which would have been serious enough on its own, the accumulated consequences of which proved fatal.

Louise’s presentation is personal, brave and inspirational – all in the name of making a difference and having a positive impact on safety in the workplace. The message is hard-hitting and will have an impact on all who attend.

The lessons learned can be applied across many industries and trades and the session will be useful in terms of assisting with planning Health and Safety Management on a strategic level, clarifying Health and Safety roles and responsibilities and reinforcing the importance of making safety personal; giving individuals the courage to stop when unsure.

Louise will be joined by Health and Safety solicitor Kate Hargan. Kate heads up the Safety Smart legal advice department. She will consider how a case such as this would be treated nowadays, post the Corporate Manslaughter Act and the new sentencing guidelines. She will examine how cases are dealt with in court these days and the factors which influence sentence.
